The Loss of a Yellow Striped Shirt
On 25 March WING invites artist Enoch Cheng to share with visitors his performative installation The Loss of a Yellow Striped Shirt that he has been working on in the space over the last two months, in collaboration with local and overseas artists.
The Loss of a Yellow Striped Shirt is an encounter on a single day, inviting the audience to become lost in an experience evoked by films, installation, music, performance, dance and fashion. The works featured in the show include music inspired by Cantonese opera on the subject of myths and exile, or films about lost items, ancient animals and plants. Other works take the form of newly made and found objects choreographed to dance with the wind or the beholder’s presence, as well as performances which contour the shape of absence.
Through an eight-hour durational event Enoch Cheng invites the visitor to experience different processes that are related to the moments of loss. According to the artist, "To lose something is an unconscious act – it is almost impossible for anyone to control how things become lost. We are aware of the fact that we cannot hold on to something forever, yet we are reluctant to let things go." Enoch associates the rupture caused by the unexpected disappearance to a musical score that is yet to find its cadence, or a film without its final scene. He suggests how this incompleteness can haunt our memory and make us realise that what has been lost is more than a single thing that has vanished without warning; it is the infinite value attached to that likely irretrievable thing. "Sometimes when what was lost is found again, its original shape no longer appeals to us as it once did. Its essence has changed. Or, we have changed, through this experience of loss".
Destined to fail to fully present a true account of loss, the artist wishes to create a space where we can at least slow down the experience of losing – the moments when things release themselves from their temporary custodians. In doing so, perhaps we can observe this daily ritual of unconsciously leaving things behind and revisit the contemporary condition where things constantly slip away from us. That wallet, that key, that zebra, that mobile phone, that bookmarked link online, that shirt, that face, that touch, that sound…
